La Paz: the two-mile-high capital

Hello All. Not much (geographic) progress since last week as we have only cycled for two days. Whilst on the border at Copacabana we went out to one of the islands on Lake Titicaca for the day (very scenic). We also witnessed the bizarre daily ceremony of ´vehicle blessing´ in front of the cathedral in town; the priest can be seen sploshing the holy water around the decorated cars. Maybe we should have got the bikes done too? Then it was eastbound including a ferry-crossing by barge, which was a bit of a squeeze with a bus (but luckily we didn´t get the barge full of cows. Apologies for pic - too hard to rotate in this programme) and a squeeze through rush-hour traffic (Japanese co-cyclist Sekiji pictured). Now we´re relaxing in the Bolivian capital La Paz at a paltry 3600m and it´s a nice city for mellowing (= cakes & barbeques). Our hosts are Linda and Raul, residents who give shelter to weary cyclists in their lovely home. We´re still getting used to hot running water and comfy mattresses (all much appreciated). And after three months on the road the scores-on-the-doors are: 50 days cycled, 3008km (along), 36,700m (up). Next destinations: Oruro and Uyuni.

Hi
no comments yet so thought I'd let you know we are still here and watching/reading. Can't believe 3000km but even more impressive is over 36,000m ascent. Staggering! That's about 36 Snowdons. Weather here is cr*p by the way. Love the hats.

Hello again! Just been looking at your pics to warm myself up - it was -3 degrees this morning and it's still icy and frosty outside!

Glad you're still having an amazing time. Life is still plodding on here at CBC but I'm sure you don't want to hear too much about that!

Take care, Sarah

Hi there! Just got up to date on your latest adventures - the stats make impressive reading! Loved those photos of the thermal lakes and the salt flat. What gorgeous colours.

I can just imagine you scouring the packets for the highest calorie foods! No probs packing in the calories here with chocs and goodies appearing daily in the office - and there's still over a week to go before Christmas!

Glad to see you're blending in with the locals with those terrific hats!!

Best of luck with the rest of your travels - look forward to hearing about Argentina and Chile.

Oh, and happy Christmas!
Love, Mary x

Greetings, sitting here in my coat in the office. The Christmas slowdown has started and the phone has stopped ringing. Have a good one both, I need a hot chocolate and a mince pie to warm up! As we say in Land Rover the adventure never stops more true for you two than me at this moment.

This is to wish you a very happy Christmas from us. After such an incredible and arduous journey, a rest in the Rioja region sounds brilliant. Enjoy the turron and vino, and have a terrific new year too,
love

Hi,
Been trying to wish you a Happy New Year, but your recent posts don't seem to have a 'post comment' option. So hope you catch this. Loved the track on the first photo of the 2008 section. Wasn't sure about that long straight road though, and definitely thought the washed-up road looked a nightmare. You deserve the bus for a while.
take care
Bill

Just enjoyed reading about your trip after Tim (friend and colleague here at Pilks) told me about it.
Enjoy southern Chile - it's truly stunning down there. I particularly liked the area around Petrohué, a tiny village on the Carretera Austral.
